Lugari residents urged to embrace sunflower farming

Residents of Lugari Sub County in Kakamega have been encouraged to adopt sunflower farming as part of the government’s strategy to reduce reliance on imported edible oils and promote local production. Speaking at a public meeting in Chekalini, Lugari Deputy County Commissioner Simon Mutai and Agriculture Officer Linet Kiyari emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of sunflower farming, which provides a sustainable source of cooking oil for households.

Mutai highlighted that the government, through the Agriculture and Food Authority, has launched a five-year Edible Oil Crops Promotion Project to enhance domestic production. He noted that farmers in Chekalini, Lumakanda, and Mautuma wards have been selected to participate in the initiative, which will offer marketing support to overcome previous challenges.

Kiyari urged farmers to take advantage of the free seeds provided and warned that they could miss out on the program’s benefits if they don’t engage. She added that the government is also promoting soya bean farming and is working on improving market access and processing facilities for farmers. The project aims to increase local production of edible oils and create employment in seed distribution, production, processing, and other related sectors.
